Reference
SC 8/80/3963
Date
[1404-1409]
Description
Petitioners
Joan of Navarre, Queen of England.
Name(s)
Navarre, Queen of England, Joan
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The queen requests the grant of lands, tenements or other possessions in the name of dower for the remainder of the 10,000 marks granted to her to be taken at the Exchequer until lands and other possessions could be found in their stead. She has already received a grant of some land, and of the custody of the lands of the late earl of Stafford and Mouthe during the minority of the heir, but many of these lands are charged to others.
Nature of endorsement
The king with the assent of the lords spiritual and temporal wishes that the queen will acquire from his hands from time to time lands, tenements, rents and other possessions until the sum that remains of the 10,000 marks is assigned to her to hold as dower as is contained in this petition.
People mentioned
Edmund [de Stafford], Earl of Stafford
John Mouthe.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1409 as a final grant was made to the queen on 1 July 1409 (CPR 1408-13, p.85). The other main series of grants which seem to be referred to in the petition date to 1403-1404, and it seems strange that the queen should wait this long to secure her rights, though the instability of Henry IV's early years may have mitigated against a final settlement (CPR 1401-5, p.328, 332, 476). A date range of 1404-1409 covers all eventualities.
