Reference
SC 8/80/3959
Date
[1332-1334]
Description
Petitioners
Commons of the land.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
1) The commons request that those sheriffs, sub-sheriffs, hundreders and others appointed in the place of the king summoned before the justices for conspiracies, confederacies and other falsities and who have by subtlety purchased charters of pardon should be ousted notwithstanding their charters.2) They further request that no high escheator or sub-sheriff be appointed without sufficient land as is demanded by the statute made at Westminster.3) They further request that a remedy is ordained so that impeachments are not made by escheators for land and tenements held of the king in chief purchased and alienated before the making of the statute.
Nature of endorsement
For those wishing to sue this petition:Concerning the first point they should have a writ to the sheriff that no such person be retained in the office of sheriff.
Places mentioned
Westminster.
Note
The petition can be dated to 1332-1334. The petition is dated by an inserted note within the petition file, possibly by Illingworth, to 1332-1337 on the basis that the statute last made at Westminster was made at a parliament held at Westminster in 6 Edw. III, and the next parliament at Westminster was in 10 Edward III. While 1332 can be accepted, the date of 1337 cannot, for a parliament was held at Westminster in September 1334.
