Nature of request
The commonalty request that only clerks who concern themselves with the points of trade are able to occupy the office of clerks of statute merchant and no other, and that they write and enrol the bonds by their own hands because great damage is done because the office is usually occupied by merchants or valets by gift of the king, who are often absent and appoint others to do the task, and know little of the rights of their office.
