Reference
SC 8/79/3925
Date
[c. 1307-c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Free tenants of North Wales.
Addressees
[None]
Nature of request
The tenants request that no goods that are not for sale be taken to stock the king's castles or sustain his justice or other ministers as this was not the custom in the time of the princes. They should purchase what they need from markets and fairs for a reasonable price.
Nature of endorsement
The justice of North Wales is ordered that he is not to permit prises to be taken other than those accustomed to be taken in times past, and he should do speedy justice to those who wish to complain of prises taken from them.
Places mentioned
North Wales.
Note
The petition is not easy to date, though it is very probable that it dates to Edward II's reign. Rees does suggest a date in the first years of Edward II, and though the matter does seem to be current late in Edward I's reign and into the first years of Edward II, Rees also shows that it was a matter complained of well into Edward III's reign. As the petition is endorsed in Latin, the petition is likely to date to before 1322, but the evidence is not sufficient to be as precise as Rees has been, so a date of 1307-1322 has been adopted (Petitions Relating to Wales, p.115).
