Reference
SC 8/79/3907
Date
[1349-1356]
Description
Petitioners
Common merchants and others.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The merchants request that they be quit and discharged as reason demands as many of them have been obstructed in the Exchequer because they have been accused by Barry of bribing the farmers to accept the custom and subsidy for one sack of wool for one and a half sacks, and many are ruined despite their wool being weighed, customs paid and cocketed by those appointed to do so under the king's seal; and that those who have falsely accused them be duly punished.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Calais, [Picardy, France].
People mentioned
Richard Barry
Walter de Chyryngton (Chirrington).
Note
The petition dates to 1349-1356 as the customs on wool were granted to Chirrington and two others on 28 August 1349, and the customs had been taken into the king's hand by 1356 (CCR 1349-54, p.99-100; CCR 1354-60, p.291). It would seem that Barry was one of Chirrington's mainpernors, and it may be that the trouble that Chirrington and his colleagues seem to have been in in the sums that they owed to the crown, and which the mainpernors were liable for were in Barry's mind. It is therefore possible that this petition is closer to 1356 in date. It is possible that the petition may be a little later, as a related petition is clearly c. 1362 (SC 8/79/3928)
