Reference
SC 8/78/3884
Date
[1312]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Westminster.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request that the king confirm their charters made by the king's father, confirm the estate of their church, and in particular an exchange of their manor of Hodford for the manor of Hendon that Rous holds from them.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be by a fine of 100 marks to be paid at the next proffer.
Places mentioned
Westminster
Hendon, [Middlesex]
Hodford, [Middlesex].
People mentioned
Roger Wellesworth, Escheator South of Trent
Richard le Rous.
Note
The petition can be dated to 1312 as the inquisition ad quod damnum is dated to 5 Edward II, and the escheator who held the inquisition served from 26 April 1311 to 30 December 1312, and there is no indication that he is the late escheator in the petition (List of Escheators, p.1). In addition licence was given for Rous to make the alienation in mortmain for the exchange on 12 March 1312 (CPR 1307-13, p.438). The subsequent petition confirms the dating of the petition as it notes that this petition was presented at York before the bishop of Chester (SC 8/78/3885). This would suggest a petition presented to the parliament which met at York in late February 1312 at a time when Walter Langton, the bishop of Coventry and Lichfield was briefly treasurer.
