Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/78/3861
Date
[c. 1317]
Description
Petitioners
John de Warbulton (Warblington).
Name(s)
de Warbulton (Warblington), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Warbulton requests that the barons of the Exchequer be ordered to cease distraining him for a relief for the manor of Sherfield following his father's death, and that he be able to hold it in the same as his ancestors. The manor is held by a grand sergeanty and no relief is paid.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is not granted because it is a grand sergeanty, and he should go to the Exchequer and there make a fine if he wishes it to be expedited.
Places mentioned
Shirefeld (Sherfield on Loddon), [Hampshire].
People mentioned
Thomas de Werbulton (Warblington), father of the petitioner.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1317 as the inquisitions post mortem of Thomas de Warblington were held in the period of January-February 1317 and John, the heir is recorded as being of 30 years of age, and could not long have remained out of his inheritance (CIPM, vol. VI, no.42). It is unlikely that the petitioner would have waited too long to complain of these actions, though one would imagine it to be in 1318-1319, so that a date of c. 1317 seems appropriate.
