Reference
SC 8/77/3847
Date
[? 1301-? 1303]
Description
Petitioners
Gerard de Wachesham.
Name(s)
de Wachesham, Gerard
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Stanstead, Suffolk
honour of Bolonye (Boulogne)
Haghele, (Haughley), Suffolk
Scotland.
Nature of request
Gerard de Wachesham states that he holds the manor of Stanstead in Suffolk of the honour of Boulogne in Haughley by a knight's fee and suit of court, and nothing else of the king in chief, and that he has done service in Scotland for the fee by distraint and duress, contrary to the form of the Great Charter. He asks that the tenancy of the manor might be proved by inquest or by Domesday Book or the Book of Fees, so that he might be discharged of this service.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ of Chancery that, when they have examined Domesday Book and the Book of Fees, if they can establish by examination of them, or in some other legitimate way, that the contents of the petition are true, then they are to do justice to the aforesaid Gerard on this matter.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1301-3' with reference to Palgrave, 'Parliamentary Writs', vol. I, p.354, where Gerard appears in a writ for military service. If this is the service mentioned in the petition, then a date of 1301-3 would seem about right, but this is by no means necessarily the correct campaign. The heads of this family were almost invariably known as Gerard in this period.
