Description
Petitioners
Ralph le Rous of Westminster, Chief Constable of Tothill.
Name(s)
Rous, Ralph
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ralph le Rous states that on the eve of St Mary Magdalene, in the King's fifteenth year, he was appointed Chief Constable of Tothill, and that, in the course of his office, he tried to attach some carts full of corn, which were unknown and travelling in an undue way by night, the men with the carts attacked him, and were then received into Westminster Abbey. They then refused to hand themselves over to justice, but imprisoned Ralph and stole his sword, which they still have. He asks for redress for this, despite the Abbot's franchise, especially as it pertains to the King's dignity.
Nature of endorsement
Before the justices.Ralph le Rous complains about the Abbot of Westminster and his bailiffs. Concerning the bailiffs of the magnates. In Chancery. He is to have a writ of trespass.

Tuthull (Tothill), [Middlesex].

Note
The petitioner states that he was appointed to his office on the eve of St Mary Magdalene, 15 Edward I (21 July 1287). The petition is unlikely to date from long after this date, although, as there is no mention of the King being abroad, it seems perhaps most likely to be from around 1290.
