Name(s)
de Wykford, Robert

canon of Exeter cathedral
Nature of request
Robert de Wykford, clerk and canon of Exeter cathedral, states that he has sued for nine months before the Bishop of Exeter to resolve a dispute between himself and another canon concerning a farm of Exeter cathedral, without making any progress. He wishes to appeal to a higher court, but does not dare to without the King's permission, as the King has recently written to the Dean and chapter reminding them that the cathedral is entirely of the foundation of his progenitors and of his patronage. Robert therefore requests the permission of the King and council to sue his right in the court of Rome or anywhere else that seems good to him; or that the Dean and chapter or the Bishop might give him swift justice, without the matter having to be placed in another's hands.
Nature of endorsement
A command is to be given to the Bishop to urge him to proceed in the case of the appeal brought before him as swiftly as he can properly do so, and to do justice to the parties according to the law of Holy Church. And it seems, because the matter is entirely spiritual and not temporal, that if the Bishop refuses to do this, it would be quite permissible for the aggrieved party to sue for a remedy elsewhere where the case may be brought.
