Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
William de Whithurst.
Name(s)
de Whithurst, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Whithurst, tenant of the lands and tenements formerly of William de Holyns, states that William de Holyns was assigned to pay the wages of certain men at arms and footsoldiers at Gloucester, in the eighth year of the King's father, and the King's father gave him £100 to do so: of which he paid part to Simon de Redynges, at the late King's command, and the rest to the current King and his mother at their coming to Gloucester when they first arrived in the realm. Afterwards, in the fourth year of the current King's reign, he was appointed keeper of the jewels, goods and chattels belonging to the Earl of Kent, in Arundel castle, which were later given to the Countess of Kent for her support, in full parliament. Now a writ of the Exchequer is being sent to the sheriff of Staffordshire, to distrain him to render account for these things, for which he has no remembrances or evidence except for an acquittance from Queen Isabella. He asks that he might be pardoned this account.
Nature of endorsement
Because William de Whithurst has shown before the council a letter of the privy seal of the King's father, which was sent to the said William de Holyns, to pay certain wages to certain people on the advice of the Constable of Gloucester castle, Gilbert Talbot, who was then Constable of the said castle, is to be ordered to inform himself about the wages which the said William de Holyns paid at his command and on his advice, and to inform the King in Chancery of the sum of the wages that he paid, and at what time they were paid. And the Countess of Kent is also to be ordered to inform Chancery if she received the jewels and other things belonging to her husband, of which the petition makes mention. And when these things have been returned, justice is to be done in Chancery. And the said William de Whithurst is to have respite from the demand made of him for these things until the feast of Trinity next, so that in the meantime he will be able to sue the said things.

Note
Dated on the dorse to '? c. 1331' with reference to the mention in the petition of 4 Edward III (25 January 1330-24 January 1331). The petition would seem to date from after this year - but of course it might be from some years after.
