Nature of request
Robert Weylaunde and Isabel his wife state that when, by conspiracy among certain people, Joan de Ciresy brought a writ of appeal against them for the death of her husband who was, and is, still alive, Robert offered to bring the husband before John de Loudham, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, but was seized and imprisoned in Norwich castle, until he had paid 40 marks for his release. Afterwards they were given a day at the King's Bench to answer the accusations against them, and brought with them the supposed victim, alive and well; and because Joan de Ciresy made a nonsuit, there was an inquiry to establish if this was the person of whose death they were accused, which found that he was. They request [a remedy] against the Sheriff for the redemption they were forced to pay for Robert's release.

It is assented by the council that certain justices are to be appointed for the whole land, to hear and determine at the suit of the King and of others, oppressions by sheriffs and other ministers.

John de Loudham was Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk between 2 February 1328 and 5 December 1330. It is hard to tell from the petition, which is damaged, whether he is still sheriff at the time of writing of this petition or not.
