Description

William Venables of Kinderton, Constable of Chester castle.
Name(s)
Venables, William
Addressees

Occupation

Nature of request
William Venables states that when a security to keep the peace was demanded from William Venables the younger before Peter de la Pole, then justice of Chester, the justice, wrongly assuming that William Venables the younger was in his keeping, charged the petitioner with guarding him until he had found this security, on pain of 1000 marks. The petitioner asks the commons to ask the King and other lords to ordain an inquiry, by authority of parliament, whether at the time he was charged in this way William Venables the younger was present, or in his keeping, or not, and if it is found that he was neither present nor in his keeping, that the charge and the penalty of 1000 marks might be declared null and void. He also asks that it might be ordained by the same authority that the 1000 marks should not be levied in the meantime.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Let it be sent to the lords.[On dorse] The King wishes the Duke of Gloucester, justice of Chester, to fine the supplicant in this petition at the sum of £20; so that the supplicant may be fully discharged of all the matter comprised in this petition.
