Reference
SC 8/77/3806
Date
[c. 1327-c. 1350]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Christchurch, Twynham.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Christchurch, Twynham state that they are being accused of acquiring lands, rents and other possessions without the King's permission, and that the charters of the King's father are not being accepted as evidence of his permission, but the Prior is being harassed and adjourned from day to day. They request a remedy, that their charters might be allowed and their response accepted, and that they might be left in peace.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is agreed in full parliament that people of religion who have purchased lands and tenements with the King's permission and by due process made on this in Chancery, by writ of ad quod dampnum, are not to be obstructed on account of such purchases; but rather are to have writs to the justices and others to cease from all such manner of obstructions because of such purchases, on all the occasions they wish to sue for them, the said Prior is to show in Chancery the evidence he has for the purchases, and if the purchases were made in the aforesaid manner, then they are to have writs to the same justices as necessary.
Places mentioned
Christchurch, Hampshire.
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
Datable on the basis of the hand to the mid-fourteenth century; the reference to the king's father suggests that the petition must date between 1327 and the mid-century.
