Reference
SC 8/77/3802
Date
[c. 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Titchfield.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Titchfield ask that the staple for wool in the south of England might be at Southampton, and not at Winchester, as has been ordained, as if it is at Winchester it will be greatly to the harm of the King, the petitioners and all others in the country with wool to sell - as the King will find if he orders an inquiry by good and loyal people from Hampshire and the adjoining counties.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Because the staple was ordained at Winchester by common counsel, the staple is to remain there.
Places mentioned
Titchfield, [Hampshire]
Southampton, [Hampshire]
Winchester, [Hampshire]
Hampshire.
Note
This petition would seem to date to c. 1332, as it is probably a response to the ordinance ordered to be published on 16 September 1332, rather than relating to the earlier establishment of a staple at Winchester between 1326 and 1328 (CPR 1330-4, pp.362-363).
