Reference
SC 8/76/3798
Date
[c. 1352]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Titchfield.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Titchfield
Nature of request
The Abbot of Titchfield states that his house is of the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester, and none of its possessions are held of the King in chief, so that it ought not to be burdened with corrodies, and that although a corrody had been granted to a servant of the King's father, letters had been granted by the late King that that was not to be taken as a precedent: and the current King had confirmed this. Nevertheless he ordered the Abbot to find a corrody, contrary to this, so the Abbot sued to the parliament held at Westminster in the King's twenty-fifth year, and received a response that his house would be discharged. [The rest of the petition is illegible, but it would seem that this response is being disregarded.]
Nature of endorsement
He is to show his letters patent in Chancery and he is to have writs there to discharge him from any place that he needs according to the form of the aforesaid letters.
Places mentioned
Titchfield, [Hampshire]
Westminster.
People mentioned
Edward [II], King of England.
Note
There is an internal reference to a petition presented on this matter in the parliament of 1351, so this is likely to date from shortly afterwards.
