Nature of request
The petitioners state that their five ships were seized by John le Smale, King's clerk, who had a commission to find ships for John de Eltham's expedition to Gascony, are remained in this state from 20 April in the King's fourth year until the following 2 September, retaining their entire crews for this period, and they have only received 5 marks for their wages for this period. They ask that they might have the remainder of their expenses, as they petitioned the last parliament and nothing has been done.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have called John Smale before them, they are to inform themselves of how long they had remained seized, and of what has been paid to them before now; and they are to let them have some consideration, by payment or by assignment, so that they do not lose entirely.
Places mentioned
Teignmouth, [Devon]
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
John le Smale, King's clerk
John de Eltham, Earl of Cornwall.
Note
The petitioner's ships were seized from 20 April to 2 September, 4 Edward III (1330). Since then there has been at least one parliament, to which they petitioned for payment - possibly that of November 1330. In that case, this petition may perhaps have been delivered to the parliament of September 1331, and must in any case be from around that time.
