Reference
SC 8/76/3779
Date
[c. 1328]
Description
Petitioners
John de Toucestre, formerly Edward II's Bailiff of Langley Marish.
Name(s)
de Toucestre, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Edward II's Bailiff of Langley Marish
Nature of request
John de Toucestre states that although he was Edward II's bailiff of Langley Marish for fifteen years and more, and had rendered account for those fifteen years, in the last year he could not render account, as he was imprisoned and robbed of all his goods, as is well known, and the bailiffs and provosts who had administration under him did not render account after he was imprisoned, and he has not been able to bring them to justice for this. He is now being distrained by the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to render account for this last year, and requests the aid of the King and the Exchequer to summon the aforesaid bailiffs and provosts, who have the aforesaid goods and chattels, to aid in rendering the account.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered to have the provost and other bailiffs and ministers who received the issues summoned before them, and, when they have heard their arguments and the arguments of the said John, if they find that the others received the said goods while the said John was in prison, and that they did not profit John at all, then they are further to have John discharged and the others charged.
Places mentioned
Langley Marish, [Buckinghamshire].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
This petition would seem to date from early in the reign of Edward III, although as it refers to Edward II as 'le roy qe mort est' it would seem to be later than 1327.
