Nature of request
John Travers states that from the Wednesday before the translation of St Thomas in the King's sixteenth year for thirteen days, the castle of Hornby, then in his keeping, was in great peril from the coming of enemies who had entered the county of Lancashire, and that he had to make great expenses to garrison it in order to save it. He asks that he might have due allowance for his reasonable costs and expenses on this matter.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons are to be ordered to inquire into what costs and expenses the same John incurred from his own money for the salvation of that castle, and into the time when he incurred them, and for what reason, and for what need; and that are to make an allowance to the same John for the costs and expenses that they can find that he incurred, from his own money, for the salvation of the aforesaid castle, in his account for his reciepts elsewhere etc.
