SC 8/76/3767
Date

Description
Petitioners
People of Truro.
Addressees
King's council.
Nature of request
The people of Truro state that their town has been greatly ruined by pestilence and other things, and cannot pay the tax demanded from it for the new fifteenth. They request a writ to the collectors of the tax on this, and that they might levy their tax elsewhere, where the people can better afford it.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ of supersedeas until next Michaelmas. And another writ is to be sent to the Sheriff to inquire, and to inform Chancery of the state of the town mentioned in the petition, between now and the feast of St John next.
Places mentioned
Truruburgh (Truro), Cornwall.
Note
Both CCR 1377-81 pp.54-55 and CCR 1377-81 p.129 are dated 4 March 1378. However, this speaks of two fifteenths granted at the last parliament - that of October 1377 - not of one, as the petition does, and CCR 1377-81 pp.54-55 states that it is in response to a petition from the collectors of the fifteenths in Cornwall, whereas this petition seems to be from the people of the town. So, although it seems likely that this petition dates from c. 1378, it is by no means certain.
