Nature of request
The petitioners make four requests:1) They request confirmation of their charter.2) They ask the King to pardon them any error committed by any bailiff of the Prior's, contrary to the tenor of their charter, through which the liberty of their church has recently been taken into his hand, and that they might be able to answer to the charges against them.3) They request restoration of their franchise as granted by King Richard, and that where it says in King Richard's charter, 'all men and all lands etc.', vills and places might be specified. And they also ask that how their justices and coroners are henceforth to be created might be specified.4) They request assize of bread and ale at Tynemouth, and the right to sell their victuals, as they always had, there and at North Shields; and that they might be able to load and unload their goods in the Tyne without hindrance, and buy what is necessary for their house in the Tyne, as at North Shields, without hindrance, as they have done since the founding of their house, so that the merchants pay customs only on those things they sell to the Prior and convent.They ask that they might have these things for a reasonable sum, according to the wealth of their house, to be paid at reasonable terms, as they are not to the King's harm or prejudice - as he will find if he inquires into this.
