Description
Petitioners
Canons, prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London, state that John de Stratford, valet of the King's kitchen, is harassing them by means of letters of the privy seal for a corrody. They request a remedy, both as they have suffered various misfortunes and their goods are not sufficient to support such a charge, and because they were founded by the King's ancestors in pure and perpetual alms, and say that such corrodies are contrary to their foundation.
Nature of endorsement
If the King or anyone else wishes to charge their house contrary to the tenor of the charters of their foundation, they are to have their defence by the law ordained in such a case.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
John de Stratford, valet of the King's kitchen.
Note
John de Stratford was granted a corrody at Holy Trinity on 23 October 1331. This petition clearly formed part of a continuing dispute over the legality and use of such grants, and Holy Trinity's ability to sustain them. On 6 June 1335 the king agreed not to make further grants, but Stratford's corrody was re-granted on his death in 1345. The petition presumably dates to some point shortly after Stratford's grant.
