Description
Petitioners
King's tenants of his castle of Trematon, both free and bond.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The King's tenants of his castle of Trematon state that Thomas de Spekyntone, by agreement with the ministers of the late John de Eltham, Earl of Cornwall, was granted two mills belonging to the castle, and the customs of the water of Sutton, agreeing to pay more than they previously used to pay, and that he took the profits and paid nothing, but allowed his mainpernors to be distrained for the money. Now, after John de Eltham's death, the King's bailiffs are again distraining the mainpernors and the poor tenants of the castle. They state that it is Thomas and his mainpernors who are obliged to pay this debt, and ask that they may be distrained, and the tenants left in peace.
Nature of endorsement
The King's ministers who receive the farms from the time of the Earl of Cornwall are to be ordered by a writ containing the effect of this petition to inform themselves by a good inquisition, or in some other manner, if the mills and waters were leased at farm, and if the farmer took the profits as the petition claims; and then they are to charge the farmer and his mainpernors, discharging the poor tenants.
