Date
[c. 1357-c. 1361]
Description
Petitioners
Stephen de Trafford and Margaret de Trafford his wife.
Name(s)
de Trafford; de Trafford, Stephen; Margaret
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stephen de Trafford and Margaret his wife state that William Fililod had seized their lands, tenements and rents at Sulgrave into the King's hands, because he had found that they were held of the King in chief, and had been alienated without his permission, but that they were returned because another inquisition found that they were held of the King's daughter Isabel, of the honour of Weedon Pinkney. Now they have been seized into the King's hand again by William for the same alienation, and granted to Richard Vinegre. Stephen and Margaret request a remedy, so that they can hold their inheritance and their chattels in peace.
Nature of endorsement
It is to be sent to Chancery; and if the process is such as the petition claims, he is to be restored as before, according to the first process.
Places mentioned
Sulgrave, Northamptonshire
Windsor, [Berkshire]
Wedon Pynkeney (Weedon Lois), [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
William Fililod (Fililode), Escheator of Northamptonshire
William Baret
Isabella [of Woodstock], daughter of Edward III
Richard Vinegre.
Note
William Fililod was escheator of Northamptonshire and Rutland between 5 July 1357 and 7 August 1361, when he died. Everything that the petitioners complain about took place during his term of office, and nothing in their language suggests that he is no longer escheator. However, it is possible that the petition was submitted shortly afterwards.
