Abbot and convent of Thornton.

Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Thornton ask that they might be paid a debt owed to them by the King, or that they might have an allowance for it in some cell or rent, or that their three following petitions might be granted:1) They state that the Abbey is of the advowson of the Earls of Aumale, which earldom is escheated to the King, and ask that they may in future be of the King's advowson, annexed to the crown; and they ask that they might have the King's charter for this.2) They request confirmation of their charters for the abbey and its lands and for the ferry at Barton-upon-Humber, releasing to them the 10s. they were accustomed to pay to Gilbert de Gaunt for their lands in Barton, and confirming these lands and others purchased before the statute in perpetual alms.3) They ask that they may be allowed to purchase houses in London, York and Beverley, as their lodgings there, and that they might have free warren in all their demesne lands.

Dated on the guard to '? c.1301' with reference to CChR 1300-26 pp.9-16, which is dated 12 May 1301, and may be in response to this petition. From the hand, this date would not seem implausible.
