Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Thorney.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Thorney
Nature of request
The Abbot of Thorney complains that the hundred of Normancross, which he and his predecessors held, was taken into the king's hand, because of the withholding of 20s of rent, although these 20.s were from the Abbot of Peterborough's vills of Alwalton and Fletton, and were allowed to the sheriff in the time of Richard I when the Abbot produced charters of franchises for the vills. He asks for the King's grace in this matter, and that his house might remain in the same estate as it was in the time of his predecessors.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Thorney, [Cambridgeshire]
Normancross hundred, [Huntingdonshire]
Alwalton, [Huntingdonshire]
Fletton, [Huntingdonshire].
People mentioned
Richard [I], King of England
the Abbot of Peterborough
Richard le Engleis (English), Sheriff of Huntingdonshire.
Note
This is probably the petition a summary of which is edited in Rot. Parl. vol. I p.52a (no.74), from a roll ascribed to the Easter parliament of 1290 by Richardson and Sayles (The English Parliament in the Middle Ages, XIX, pp.146-7), especially as no answer is recorded on that roll. However, the hundred was not restored to the abbot and convent until 1 February 1292 (CPR 1281-92 p.473), and it says there that it was taken into the King's hand in 15 Edward I (20 November 1286 - 19 November 1287), so there remains a possibility that this is in fact another petition on the same subject.CPR 1281-92 pp.369 is dated 28 June 1290.
