Description

de Thorntoft, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Thorntoft states that he has sued in Common Bench against the Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England concerning an annuity which is in arrears to him for eight years and more, but without success, as the result of the favour of the King's ministers. He asks that a remedy might be ordained in such a case, for God and for the common profit of the realm. He states that he has sued to the justices for the averment of the issues in Middlesex, according to the statute, and that they have done nothing, and asks that they might be told to hold inquisitions into the people who come before them in assizes according to the statute, for the King's advantage and William's.
Nature of endorsement
The justices of Common Bench are to be ordered to institute an inquiry according to the form of the statute, into whether they are waiting for the averment, and this by good and loyal people who are not suspected; and they are to do swift justice to him.
