Reference
SC 8/75/3729
Date
[c. 1300-c. 1350]
Description
Petitioners
People of the Isle of Thanet.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of the Isle of Thanet make two requests:1) They state that the Abbot of St Augustine of Canterbury is claiming certain rights in a lathe that always used to belong to the king, and ask that they might be maintained in the estate in which they always have been.2) They state that it was found in the last Eyre that Roger, formerly Abbot of St Augustine of Canterbury, had stopped up a watercourse leading to the vill of Minster, along which merchandise was carried, to their great harm, but that judgment has been adjourned. They ask that the record of this might be sought out, and judgment given.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition: they are to have a writ in the name of the King and of the same tenants that, whereas the lord King and his ancestors always hitherto used to have presentations etc. in their aforesaid lathe, in all things belonging to the view, so that the Abbot or his predecessors never used to have any presentations in his hundreds, except for the breaking of the assize of bread and ale, the Abbot is to be attached before the King on this, to answer etc. With regard to the second: they are to explain where the record is, and a writ is to be issued to have it brought etc.; and justice is to be done.
Places mentioned
Isle of Thanet, [Kent]
Ringslow hundred, [Kent]
Canterbury, [Kent]
Minster, [Kent]
Bleangate hundred, [Kent]
Cornilo hundred, [Kent]
Downhamford hundred, [Kent].
People mentioned
Abbot of St Augustine of Canterbury
Roger, formerly Abbot of St Augustine of Canterbury.
Note
Dated impressionistically to the first half of the fourteenth century on the basis of the hand; the reference to the eyre of Kent does not make it clear how much time had elapsed since those sessions, and attempts at establishing eyres in the county were made by the crown during interregna in the archbishopric of Canterbury through to 1348.
