Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
John Coles, Abbot of Tewkesbury.
Name(s)
Coles, John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of Tewkesbury
Nature of request
John, Abbot of Tewkesbury, states that John Deverel disseised his predecessor, Thomas, of the manor of Tarrant Rushton, and that Thomas died before he could take action on this. Now the manor has been seized into the King's hand because of John's forfeiture, and the Abbot requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Good people are to be appointed to inquire into the things contained in this petition, and when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, what is just and reasonable is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Tewkesbury, [Gloucestershire]
Ruyston (Tarrant Rushton), [Dorset].
People mentioned
John Deverel
Thomas [de Kempsey], Abbot of Tewkesbury.
Note
John Deverel was granted lands in 1330, but had forfeited by 1331 (CIM 1307-49, no.1195), possibly at the same time as the people mentioned in CIM 1307-49, no.1301. Ellis de Deverel, father of John, granted rights to the hospital of Tarrant Rushton to the Prior of Christchurch, Twyneham, in 1304 (ibid, no.1301), but Tewkesbury appears to have had an interest in that hospital (Knowles & Hancock, Medieval Religious Houses, p.388), and this petition may be connected with this grant.
