Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Tavistock state that they hold certain isles in the sea between Cornwall and Ireland, of which the largest is called Scilly, to which ships come passing between France, Normandy, Spain, Bayonne, Gascony, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Cornwall: and, because they feel that in the event of a war breaking out between the kings of England and France, or between any of the other places mentioned, they would not have enough power to do justice to these sailors, they ask that they might exchange these islands for lands in Devon, saving the churches on the islands appropriated to them.
Nature of endorsement
An inquisition is to be held into the contents by Walter de Gloucestre, the King's Escheator, and by Thomas de la Hyde, so that the Escheator inquires in person; and the inquisition is to be returned before the King's council.

Note
Walter de Gloucestre was Escheator South of the Trent between 26 May 1298 and 26 April 1311. Thepeittion is possibly before 1306, as CPR 1301-7 p.480 (dated 22 November 1306) has the king granting commissions of oyer et terminer in the Isles, and mentions a coroner, whom CPR 1307-13 p.258 says is the king's.
