Description
Petitioners
Gilbert Talebot (Talbot).
Name(s)
Talebot (Talbot), Gilbert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Gilbert Talebot makes two requests:1) He states that he was taken with the Earl of Lancaster, and by procurement and advice of Hugh le Despenser made a recognisance to the King in Chancery to have his life, and another to have his lands. These are now being demanded of him: he asks to be pardoned this recognisance, and that it might be considered void, and that he might have a writ to the Exchequer to cease demanding it.2) He states that Gilbert de Asshe, with the abetment of Hugh le Despenser, wrongly levied certain monies from him and his mother in the time of the King's father, which he still holds. He asks that they might be repaid.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent to Chancery, and if the fine or redemption was made in Chancery because of the quarrel, it is to be annulled there, and if elsewhere, commands are to be given to annul it; and the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered to annul it there.Gilbert de Asshe is also to be ordered, by writ [in] due form, that if the monies levied as the petition claims are levied by reason of the quarrel etc., and the King has not been paid these monies, he is to restore them.
