Description
Petitioners
Adrian Taut.
Name(s)
Taut, Adrian
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Adrian Taut, from Zealand, complains that he has lost three ships, taken at sea by the men of Normandy and Brittany, and that his sailors have been killed and his brother put to ransom. He requests a safe-conduct for himself and his brother, and promises in return that they will find two large ships with crew for the King, at their own cost: and he asks for an acquittance of rent for this, so that they can serve the King as his loyal subjects.
Nature of endorsement
Letters patent of safe-conduct are to be issued to last for a year, for Adrian Taut and Peter his brother, and they are to have permission through them to do all the damage they can to the king's enemies, saving however the king's lieges, allies, adherents and well-wishers, and those with letters of safe-conduct. They are to find the two ships as they have promised. Adrian is to take an oath [of loyalty to the king] in Chancery for himself and his brother, and they are both to take an oath to do as they have promised: and they are to have permission by the letters to buy and sell all manner of goods throughout the king's obedience like any other of his lieges, without let or hindrance from anyone.
