Reference
SC 8/75/3707
Date
[1368-1369]
Description
Petitioners
Andrew Sakeville (Sackville) and John Waleys (Walsh), members of parliament for Surrey and Sussex.
Name(s)
Sakeville (Sackville); Waleys (Walsh), Andrew; John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Surrey
Sussex
Guildford, [Surrey].
Nature of request
Andrew Sakeville and John Waleys, members of parliament for Surrey and Sussex, state that the sheriffs have lately found it harder to raise the farms of their counties because of grants of franchises within those counties, without the franchise being lowered correspondingly. And now the present sheriff has been ordered by the council to take control of Guildford castle and of the gaol there, and to live there, without receiving anything for this, although the castle is in a state of disrepair, which will be to his ruin and that of future sheriffs and their heirs. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Note
Sakeville and Waleys served together as members of Parliament for Sussex in both the 1368 and 1369 parliaments (as well as other occasions with other colleagues). Neither ever sat for Surrey, and presumably the scribe must have confused the parliamentary representation with the sheriff, who would have acted in both Surrey and Sussex.
