Nature of request
Beaufort requests that for the safe keeping of the town and castle of Calais, which was entrusted to him, that full payment of the arrears of wages be made to the soldiers, or discharge the earl of the keeping of the same town and castle so that no blame can be attached to him if any mischief should occur. He further requests that if remedy is made that it is ordained to him sufficient assignment according to the purport of the indentures made for his office of captain.
Nature of endorsement
The king, with the assent of the lords spiritual and temporal wish that whatsoever sums the treasurer first receives, he should pay the earl for the arrears as the petition makes mention, and that in future the earl be paid in peace and war according to the form and effect of the indentures made between the king and the earl as appears more fully in the petition.
