Date

Description
Petitioners
John de Sneyton.
Name(s)
de Sneyton, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Sneyton requests that the king order the justices that it they should do justice to Sneyton, and that the truth of the matter be enquired of Ayremynne, as Ayremynne had resigned the church of Whitburn, and Bishop Kellaw gave the church to Sneyton. He held it until Welleburn alleged to the king that the living was vacant by the bishop's death whereby he was ousted from the church. Sneyton sued Welleburn in Court Christian, but Welleburn has delayed the case by obtaining that royal letters.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered by a writ of the great seal to the judges and others to whom the party wishes to sue and that it was never the king's intention that on account of any command of his that they should omit anything which is understood to pertain to them in their processes to be undertaken in this matter by ecclesiastical censure.
Places mentioned
Whitburn, [County Durham].
People mentioned
Richard [Kellaw], Bishop of Durham
William de Ayremynne
Nicholas de Welleburn.
Note
The petition dates to 1317. The petitioner had been granted the church of Whitburn on 24 June 1316, but with the death of Bishop Kellaw on 9 October 1316, Welleburn obtained a presentation to the same church on 23 October 1316 (Reg. Dunelm II, pp.810-11; CPR 1313-17, p.556). Snayton's case was on going and finally prohibited on 15 July 1323 (CPR 1321-24, p.325). However the petition seems to be from shortly after Snayton was originally ousted from the church.
