Reference
SC 8/74/3679
Date
[c. 1336]
Description
Petitioners
William Shounyn of Brentingby and Agnes Shounyn, his wife.
Name(s)
Shounyn; Shounyn, William; Agnes
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners request a similar writ to the current escheator to enquire, as was previously commanded so that the petitioners are not disinherited. They leased their land in Brentingby to Bereford. These came into the king's hand by Bereford's forfeiture, and the petitioners petitioned to the king and council to have a writ to Trussel, this was granted but he was removed before he could act on the writ.
Nature of endorsement
He should have a similar writ as before, and when the inquisition is returned, let it be ordered before the king, and there let justice be done.
Places mentioned
Brentingby, Leicestershire.
People mentioned
Simon [de] Bereford
William Trussel, Escheator south of the Trent.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1336 as a lengthy entry in the close rolls by which the justices were ordered to justice to the petitioners was issued on 12 November 1336. However, this does not seem to closely relate to the contents of the petition, so that the order may represent a subsequent stage in this matter (CCR 1333-7, pp.720-1).
