Date
[c. 1300-c. 1325]
Description
Petitioners
William (de Seyngham), son of Eustace de Seyngham of Seyngham.
Name(s)
de Seyngham, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Seyngham requests grace and remedy and that Matthew de Eschek, who has often been attainted of evil, be attainted of his deceit by the country since he falsely and in deceit of the king's court made to enter a recognizance in the Exchequer of the king's father in his 17th year of an annual rent of 40s. to be paid by William and his heirs, though he was within age, and he now claims the arrears as William has come of age.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
People mentioned
Eustace de Seyngham, father of the petitioner
[Matthew] del Eschek (of the Exchequer)
Note
The events described in the petition must have occurred during Edward I's reign, since an IPM for Eustace was ordered on 8 April 1285, when William was said to be 22 years old (Eustace may have been dead for a while from the sense of the IPM). Presumably it is therefore early Edward II, referring back to Edward I, but references to coming of age seem strange. Matthew del Eschek was active under Edward I (see SC 8/1/2 and SC 8/52/2596, dated to 1290). Given these problems, an impressionistic dating of the first quarter of the fourteenth century has been assigned.
