Date
[1326-1327]
Description
Petitioners
John Fitz Alan le Serger.
Name(s)
Fitz Alan le Serger, John
Addressees
Queen Isabella and Edward of Woodstock, Duke of Aquitaine.
Nature of request
Fitz Alan requests that justice be done to him as he he made a covenant with Charlton who loaned to him a sum for which he enfeoffed Charlton of his tenements in the parish of St Martin Orgar, the charter and seisin to be void if Fitz Alan paid the sum at a certain day. And when he came to pay the sum at the appointed day he was imprisoned, and Charlton refused to accept the money or deliver seisin, and he has been kept out of it since the eleventh year of the reign, and Charlton has since taken a further rent that came to him by the death of his sister.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
John de Cherlton (Charlton)
Elen [Fitz Alan], wife of the petitioner
Isabella of France, Queen of England
Edward of Woodstock, Duke of Acquitaine.
Note
The petition dates to late 1326 or early 1327 as the petition is addressed to Queen Isabella and Duke Edward, though it is still seemingly in the reign of Edward II as the petition refers to the eleventh year of the current king. It is clearly part of the confused period when the reign of Edward II had not officially come to an end, but when power effectively lay with the queen.
