Reference
SC 8/74/3657
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
William Selidde.
Name(s)
Selidde, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Selidde requests that grace and remedy be done to him concerning the disseisin of his lands in Eastbourne by Badlesmere. He has been unable to recover the lands, and they are now in the king's hand by Badlesmere's forfeiture.
Nature of endorsement
Let justices be assigned to enquire of the truth in the presence etc. and the inquisition returned, and let the king be certified.
Places mentioned
Eastbourne, Sussex.
People mentioned
Bartholomew de Badelesmere (Badlesmere).
Note
The petition would seem on the basis of an entry in the fine rolls to date to 1325 when the escheator was ordered to deliver the lands in Eastbourne to Selidde (CFR 1319-27, pp.365-6). However, this does not seem to fit with the petition that requests the return of land in the king's hand by Badlesmere's forfeiture. A complaint against Badlesmere would more likely be made in 1322, and it is possible that the return of the land was as a result of subsequent action by Selidde. A date of c. 1322 would take in both dates.
