Reference
SC 8/74/3654
Date
[1326-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Christiana de Segrave, widow of John de Segrave.
Name(s)
de Segrave, Christiana
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Christiana de Segrave requests that a writ be sent to the justices of the Bench to proceed in the process so that she is not delayed in her dower, as she brought a writ of dower against Alice de Segrave to vouch to warranty, but John son of Stephen is a minor and his lands and body are in the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
Because this plea touches dower, let it be ordered by a writ of Chancery to the justices that they proceed in the plea and do justice, notwithstanding that the heir and his lands are in the keeping of the king.
People mentioned
John de Segrave, husband of the petitioner
Alice [de Segrave], widow of Stephen de Segrave
John [de Segrave], son of Stephen de Segrave.
Note
John de Segrave and Nicholas de Segrave both died in 1325, and the wardship of Stephen's son and heir, John, was granted to the Earl of Norfolk in March 1327 (Complete Peerage, xi, p.609). Since the lands are said to be in the king's hands, presumably the petition dates from between Stephen's death and this grant of wardship, although Christiana was still living in 1331.
