Reference
SC 8/73/3644
Date
[c. 1319]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of St Swithin, Winchester.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request remedy as they were granted 30 marks from the profits of the fair of St Giles for the repair of their church by the bishops of Winchester, and they received this sum until the death of John Sandale when the bishopric was taken into the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
They should show their agreement and charter of the king in Chancery and concerning the current vacancy the keeper of the bishopric is to be ordered to pay the sum, and concerning the last vacancy the treasurer and barons are to be ordered to examine the accounts of the keepers, and if they find that the sum was allowed they are to do justice to the prior and keepers, and if it wasn't they are to do justice to the prior.
Places mentioned
Winchester, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
John de Sandale.
Note
The petition seems to be dated to [c. 1319] as the petition refers to this being after the death of John Sandale who died that year. As not all of this petition is legible, it is possible that the petition dates to 1324 in the next vacancy as the keepers were ordered to pay the rent that was then being withheld, but this seems unlikely (CCR 1323-7, p.71).
