Reference
SC 8/73/3613
Date
[1264-1276]
Description
Petitioners
Sokemen of Sunderland and Shoreston.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The sokemen request that they can hold in their usages, customs, and services that they have made before this time, and that they can have justice for the wrongful exactions of the warden, and have warranty from the king that they can hold in the usages as they had under the king's father.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
North Sunderland, [Northumberland]
Shoreston, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Robert de Nevile (Neville), the king's warden.
Note
The petition is clearly very early, and Fraser suggests a date of 1264-1276 that was the period of Neville's tenure (Northumberland Petitions, pp.109-110 (no.84)). The petitioners requests that they can hold for the services that they did under the king's father, but it is not clear whether this is a petition of Henry III harking back to the time of King John, thus dating the petition more closely to 1264-1272, or a petition of the reign of Edward I dating the petition to 1272-1276.
