Reference
SC 8/72/3599
Date
[c. 1317]
Description
Petitioners
Prior of Stoke.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of Stoke
Nature of request
The prior requests remedy and the king's grace as Beche is withholding rent which is due to them from certain tenements in Toppesfield lately held by Berwick and in the king's keeping during the minority of Berwick's heir, Beche being granted the wardship.
Nature of endorsement
They should view the inquisitions returned into Chancery after the death of Berwick, and they should hear the petition of the prior, and do justice to him in Chancery.
Places mentioned
Toppesfield, [Essex].
People mentioned
John de Berewyk (Berwick)
William de Beche.
Note
The petition can be dated to c. 1317 as the wardship of Berwick's heir was granted to Beche on 14 March 1317, and it is unlikely that the prior would have waited long to petition once it became clear that Beche was resisting payment of the rent (CPR 1313-17, p.627).
