de Stoke, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stoke requests that a remedy be ordained for him for St Maur granted to him the lands that he had in Chelworth and Knoyle in tail of which he was peaceably seised, St Maur keeping a life interest. On St Maur's death the lands and tenements were taken into the king's hand by the escheator following inquisitions taken by the procurement of individuals who did not know of Stoke's seisin. Stoke has taken a writ of Chancery but cannot recover the lands because of the inquisition and because the escheator will not act without a special order of the king under the privy seal.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be ordered into Chancery and the process mentioned by the petition be viewed and if an inquisition has found for the king, and the plaintiff has not had a writ to enquire better on this in response to an earlier petition, then a commission is to be made to good people to enquire anew of this, and upon this being returned let justice be done to the king and the party.
