Reference
SC 8/72/3596
Date
[c. 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of the vill of Stockbridge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The commonalty requests that it be enquired of by good and law-worthy men in Hampshire and in the adjoining counties concerning the location of the wool staple. They wish it to be at Southampton, but if it remains at Winchester it will be to their ruin and to all other wool sellers, and to the king's damage.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.2) Because it was ordained by the council that the staple was at Winchester, let the staple be held there.
Places mentioned
Stockbridge, [Hampshire]
Southampton, [Hampshire]
Winchester, [Hampshire].
Note
The petition dates to c. 1332 as it is probably a response to the ordinance ordered to be published on 16 September 1332, rather than relating to the earlier establishment of a staple at Winchester between 1326 and 1328 (CPR 1330-4, pp.362-363).
