Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/72/3593
Date
[1298-1307]
Description
Petitioners
William Stonhard, barber of London.
Name(s)
Stonhard, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
barber
Nature of request
Stonhard requests that the sheriff who is at the current parliament be ordered to pay him for the sum that he lost, as the sheriff arrested Lascelles and Ireby by a writ purchased by Stonhard for a debt that they owed him but he allowed them to go. He also states that the king should be served for the escape.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue against the sheriff by a writ according to the form of the statute.
People mentioned
Robert de Lascelles
Alan de Ireby
William de Mulcastre (Muncaster), Sheriff of Cumberland.
Note
The petition can be dated to 1298-1307 because Muncaster was sheriff of Cumberland on two occasions from 1298-1303, and from 1304-1307 (List of Sheriffs, p.26). As the petition records that the debt ought to have been paid at Martinmas in 1296 (24 Edward I), it seems likely that the petition dates to sometime earlier in Muncaster's extended period as sheriff.
