King and council.
Nature of request
Stirkeland requests a writ to the justices assigned to take the assizes in Westmorland that they proceed in the assize of novel disseisin concerning his right to take estovers in the woods of Strickland Ketel and Helsington against Tweng, Ros and Coucy, notwithstanding that a third part of the wood is in the king's hand by the death of Coucy.

Helsington, Westmorland
Siresergh (Sizergh), Westmorland
Kendal, [Westmorland].
People mentioned
Thomas de Tweng
Thomas de Ros of Kendal
William de Coucy.
Note
The IPM entry reference noted on the guard refers to one Thomas Ward of Kendal (CIPM, vol. VIII, no.516). This refers to some of the land he holds being held of the king because of the death of William de Coucy, and other lands being held of Thomas de Ros and Thomas de Tweng. Coucy's IPM was held on 25 March 1343 (CIPM, vol. VIII, no.462). It is unclear why Coucy's lands remained in the king's hand at the time of Ward's IPM in January 1345 as Coucy's IPM records him as having an heir of full age. A date for this petition of c. 1345 does not seem unreasonable, though it is open to some question as the response to the petition suggests that it was presented at a parliament, and that an answer was to be given at the next, and which parliaments are referred to is difficult to determine.
