Reference
SC 8/72/3584
Date
[c. 1276-c. 1279]
Description
Petitioners
Geoffrey de Sceftinton (Skeftington).
Name(s)
de Sceftinton (Skeftington), Geoffrey
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
Sceftinton requests that he can have his seisin of a moiety of the manor of Tissinton which was taken into the king's hand by the sheriff of Derbyshire by false allegation that the moiety was held of the king in chief.
Nature of endorsement
He should wait the coming of age of the heir, and afterwards the parties will be heard.
Places mentioned
Dissinton (Tissington), [Derbyshire]
Barony of Tutbury.
People mentioned
Sheriff of Derbyshire
Henry de Audedeleye (Audley)
Thomas de Hendesovere (Edensor)
Edmund [of Lancaster], brother of the king
Robert [de Ferrers], Earl of Derby.
Note
The petition clearly dates to the reign of Edward I, since it refers to Edmund, the king's brother (d.1296). An inquisition into this matter was ordered on 27 March 1279, but refers to William de Audley rather than Henry; presumably John de Audley had died and William was the 'heir' mentioned in the endorsement. John appears to have been alive in 4 Ed I (Yeatman, 'Feudal History of Derbyshire'), and hence this would suggest that the petition dates to the period 1276-1279.
