Description

Duke of Gloucester and the lords temporal and spiritual in parliament.
Occupation
Abbot of Shrewsbury
Nature of request
The abbot requests a commission out of Chancery of oyer and terminer at his suit of the injuries done to them by Perle and others who have at the last fair held from the feast of St Peter ad Vincula came arrayed for war and took the profits which pertained to the abbot. He further requests writs to Perle and the others to appear before the chancellor and to find sufficient surety to keep the peace towards the abbot and all the king's lieges.1)
Nature of endorsement
It is ordered by the lords in parliament held at Westminster . . . 2 Henry V that the parliament that the petition be given to the king's council with the power with the assent of the lords to hear and finally determine the matter comprised within the petition at their discretion; and that a writ is directed to the bailiffs of Shrewsbury and the commonalty to be before the council at Hillary next to answer to the matters contained within the petition with all the relevant records of the town with authority to do and receive what the council adjudges. And another writ is to be directed to Perle and the others to be before the council at the same time to answer for the same. And another writ is to be directed to the abbot and convent to send one or two members of their community with sufficient authority to sue their petition and present their evidence. And it was commanded by the Chancellor in parliament to John Perle and Urian Seint Pier, burgesses of the town at that parliament to keep the peace towards the abbot and convent under penalty of 1,000 marks, and it was ordered to William Pole, monk of the abbey to keep the peace to the burgesses and commons of the town under the same penalty.2) Because Richard Lakyn, knight before the lords of the council has attested that he is obliged to stand for the abbot and convent to the arbitration of the arbitors elected by the parties, and that it is the abbot's wish that the same bailiffs and burgesses and other people named above be dismissed. Therefore they are quit and without a day.

Note
The petition is dated to 1423 as the first response records that this was a petition presented at the Westminster parliament of 20 October 1423 (1 Hen. VI). The date is unfortunately partially obscured by the unfortunate application of a repair tape, but enough is legible with the assistance of the Handbook of British Chronology (p. 568) to confirm this.
