Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/71/3542
Date
[c. 1325-c. 1350].
Description
Petitioners
Walter de Spekyngton.
Name(s)
de Spekyngton, Walter
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Walter de Spekyngton states that due to the malice of jurors in a plea between himself and the King, he was accused of conspiring to have Aimery le Botiler and John le Forester falsely indicted, and then to acquit them for 100s. Walter claims that he is innocent, but can have no attaint in Chancery because the matter touches the King. He requests a remedy by attaint if it please the council; and if it does not, that that the transcript of the record might be sent to the Bishop of Bath and Wells or to some other great man to inquire into this, and to inform the King in Chancery, so that the King and council can be informed on this, and the King can do to Walter as he pleases.
Nature of endorsement
The common law is to run its course.
Places mentioned
Bristol, [Gloucestershire]
Kingston Seymour, [Somerset]
Ludeford (West Lydford), [Somerset].
People mentioned
[Thomas] de Bradeston, Justices
Richard Wyleby (Willoughby), Justice
Aimery le Botiler, Parson of the church of Kingston Seymour
John le Forester of West Lydford
[Ralph of Shrewsbury], Bishop of Bath and Wells.
Note
This petition is dated on the guard to 1354, because of the mention of a pardon given to the petitioner for the death of John de Spekynton, dated 4 November 1354 (CPR 1354-8 p.135). It seems unlikely, however, that this is directly related to this case, as although the justice Thomas de Bradeston is mentioned, the whole case seems to have taken place in Somerset, whereas this petition mentions Bristol. The petition is therefore dated notionally to the second quarter of the fourteenth century.
